Swim Coach Pleads Guilty to Sex With Teen, Gets 16 Months

Upon accepting a plea deal Friday, Todd Sousa is sentenced to state prison. The teenage victim's parents say he manipulated their daughter.

The South Orange County swim coach who parents said used his position of authority to manipulate their daughter into repeatedly having sex with him, will spend 16 months in state prison, a judge ordered Friday.

, 37, . As part of the plea bargain, he will also register for life as a sex offender and spend three years on parole.

"You used your position of trust and authority to groom, manipulate and distort a vibrant, healthy girl," the victim's father said, addressing Sousa directly during the brief hearing in Santa Ana. "No amount of apologies or demands for forgiveness will ever correct the obscene acts."

Sousa was handcuffed after the girl's emotional parents read their victim impact statements for Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert R. Fitzgerald to consider.

Had Sousa stood trial and been convicted on all counts, he faced a maximum 13 years behind bars.

"Todd was someone she trusted," the girl's mother said. "We are all grateful these were not violent attacks, but in some ways it's worse. The perpetrator was not a stranger."

Sousa, who with his wife, was arrested in February while teaching for Aquazots, a swim club that uses JSerra Catholic High School's pool.

The victim's parents said the sexual relationship played emotional havoc with their once-outgoing daughter, who used to find joy in swimming. "Will my daughter always think it's OK for someone to take advantage of her?" her mother asked, concluding that that Sousa should never be allowed to coach again.
