Train Hits SUV But There Are No Injuries

Occupants of the vehicle cleared it before it was struck by an Amtrak passenger train near JSerra Catholic High. Street traffic was backed up more than an hour.

A potential tragedy to close out the year was avoided Saturday afternoon when a passenger train struck an SUV in San Juan Capistrano. Fortunately, there were no injuries.l

The accident occurred just west of the JSerra Catholic High School athletic fields, at Oso Road and Camino Capistrano.

A Ford SUV broke down on Oso Road at the railroad tracks, but the occupants of the vehicle were able to clear it before it was struck by a southbound Amtrak passenger train, according to Lt. Lynn Koehmstedt of the Orange County Sheriff Dept.

Koehmstedt added that there were no reported injuries on the train.

The incident, which took place at 4:14 p.m., backed up traffic as lanes were closed until 5:30.
