Vandals struck an equipment shed full of play equipment at , sometime during the winter recess, reported Principal Silvia Pule.
“The damage to the shed was noticed today and it was reported to the sheriff’s department. It may have happened over the holidays,” Pule said.
As of right now, the shed’s door is dented inward and cannot be opened, Pule said.
Although school was back in session on Tuesday, staff wasn’t aware of the problem until today because it contains physical education equipment used on “Workout Wednesdays,” Pule said
“The Workout Wednesdays Program was initiated by a group of parent volunteers during the students’ regular lunch recess,” Pule said. “Students may choose to play with the regular playground equipment during their recess or may choose to join the parent volunteers to test their flexibility with a sit-and-reach box or join in special aerobic, yoga, Tae Kwon Do or other presentations.”
Students were disappointed in not being able to access the play equipment today, said San Juan Elementary PTA President Melissa Hodge.
Pule said maintenance personnel will try to fix the dented door.
If so, “the students and volunteers will be able to use the equipment right away,” Pule said. “If we have to replace the door, it will cost approximately $450, and it may take a bit longer to access the equipment.”
