Capo Unified Candidate Statement: Jim Reardon

Candidate wants a change in leadership at CUSD.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Patch is running each Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees candidate's statement on file with the county Registrar of Voters office on consecutive days. One candidate, Don Franklin Richardson, did not file a candidate's statement. Trustee Area No. 2 covers Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch and parts of San Juan Capistrano.

NAME: Jim Reardon

OCCUPATION: Business Owner/Engineer

The current CUSD Board of Trustees has reduced the school year, cut teachers and increased class size. We can’t afford another “all cuts” budget. Now more than ever, our school board must focus on education and not union contracts that protect senior staff.

A change in leadership is needed. Together we can put students first.

I’m a parent, engineer, active business owner and a founder of a successful educational nonprofit. I am able to see past the heated rhetoric of education insiders to protect our students and schools. I favor classroom reform, school choice, local control and program improvement.

I will fight for:

Smaller class sizes,

A quality education for all students, and

Retention of enrichment, vocational and sports programs.

Your tax dollars cannot be wasted. I promise never to vote for a tax increase or extension. WE pay enough tax and Mello-Roos assessments already.

To improve transparency between CUSD and community, we will begin broadcasting our school board meetings. Parents have a right to know how decisions are being made.

Elect me, Jim Reardon, to your school board.

Reardon has sued CUSD multiple times and his family and others have benefited directly from the previous Board's votes to award monies as a result. He is currently involved in a lawsuit against SJC too! http://www.ocregister.com/news/district-212910-capistrano-families.html His ad this weekend in The Ladera Times used the CUSD logo and failed to identify who was paying for the ad. Both are violations of Ed Code, CA law and election laws. CUSD can't afford a frequent filer and someone who thinks he is above the law http://www.ocregister.com/news/district-212910-capistrano-families.html

Truth, and not fiction would be nice. What's your position with the teachers union. Are you the new blog watcher for the union? FYI, Reardon only sued CUSD one time for Brown Act violations. Read the DA reports, me thinks Reardon's lawsuit was right on, unless of course you like backroom deals outside the public eye, which is what the union is always pushing for.
P.A.L. September 06, 2012 at 10:50 PM
Don't like unions but I don't think people that have their kids in private school should be elected to public school boards. Those lawsuits were not valid. Reardons rush to always sue is not what public servants should be doing
Lauren September 07, 2012 at 02:12 PM
Jim has my vote. There was a valid reason he sued and he had a right to get things corrected. The school board ignored their concerns for many years. He cares about this town and just because his youngest son is in private school has no bering on his ability or reason to run for office and his leadership or desire to see things change for the better.
Kids First! September 07, 2012 at 02:19 PM
Jim only cares about himself and how much $$ he can milk from CUSD. It is a dismal and disgraceful record and why SJC rejected him before and will again
concerned parent September 07, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Jim has my vote too. I can only imagine what the union's going to throw at him--but I respect that he's tough enough to confront them and to try to do what's right. It's time to elect a candidate who will truly make students the priority and maybe get this district back on a firm financial footing so that it doesn't have to borrow money to cover payroll...

Chicago Teachers Union planning to strike against Chicago Public Schools for "unfair labor" practices among others. 400,000 kids and 10,000s fac/staff in the stake if no agreement by Sept 9th at 12am.
Clint Worthington September 07, 2012 at 07:10 PM
I am not afraid to put my name on here. Jim, you have my vote.
Dan Avery September 09, 2012 at 06:09 AM
Sure if you want to keep Capo ranked at 113th in the state, vote for this guy. He'd be good.
Sharon Y September 09, 2012 at 12:39 PM
There is NEVER a valid reason to steal money from the classrooms for personal gain. You private school supporters made a big mistake getting Reardon to run for CUSD. "Gypsies, Tramps and Theives" -
concerned parent September 09, 2012 at 02:29 PM
Dan Avery, he's the one candidate who's not afraid to rock the boat and challenge the status quo? Why on earth would he be the one to vote for if you want to shake something up and get a higher quality school system for CUSD? Makes no sense. I can tell you that the majority board's plan to lop off three weeks of school certainly doesn't further the case for better education....
concerned parent September 09, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Fake Sharon, perhaps your schooling forgot the "i before e except after c" lesson. The word is "thieves," and it's a lie like everything else you post.
Capo Parent September 18, 2012 at 08:22 PM
Since he got no money from CUSD your post is silly and factually incorrect. Since it appears you're a lover of I'llpay, Prichard and their crowd you should change your moniker to Union First, it would be much mtore accurate and appropriate..
Capo Parent September 18, 2012 at 08:25 PM
So youre plan is to vote for the trustees who got us to 113? That's like saying you would have stayed on the Titanic while it was sinking because the water was too cold. Any other brilliant ideas you ideas you'd like to share/

Mr. Reardon, I would like to know how you obtained my family's e-mail to send out candidate information for both Kim McCarthy and Roy Brynes. I have never given you my e-mail. I am a Democrat but my husband is a Republican and I know that neither of these are endorsed by either party. I do not know you personally so I would like to know how you obained my e-mail?
shelly October 24, 2012 at 07:00 PM
As a candidate for the school board and someone who supports Kim McCarthy's campaign do you share Kim McCarthy's view of Marco Forster Middle School. In the letter she is against parents receiving parent information in Spanish. She is against people speaking Spanish on the Campus. She asked for the picture of the Mexican flag painted in a mural to be removed. The flag was painted with an American Flag by students at Marco Forster in 1994 in a mural that was meant to heal racial tensions after racist flyers signed by WAR (White Aryan Resistance) were stuffed into lockers. The mural contains the following quote in Spanish and English, "“Between individuals, as between nations, respect for another’s rights is peace.” by Pres. Benito Juarez.
shelly October 24, 2012 at 07:10 PM
Kim McCarthy stated in her letter to CUSD, "I have spent a significant amount of time at Marco, yet I have never been comfortable there. Why? Because this school is operated as if it is a Mexican Public School, not an American Public School. • The Mexican flag is painted on the multi-purpose room wall next to the portrait of a Mexican man with a quote in Spanish." "Please do not allow the Mexican flag to remain on the walls at Marco. " "• The messages on the phones are in Spanish, all of the paperwork is in both Spanish and English." "• On parent teacher night when parents only are requested, many of the Latinos bring their children anyway, as interpretors." "• An awards ceremony at the end of the school year was given in English and then parents had to painstakingly sit through it interpreted by teachers in Spanish to the gasps of the many English-speaking parents."
shelly October 24, 2012 at 07:11 PM
Mr. Reardon, The reality of our district is that we have Spanish speaking parents. In order to help the student parents need school parent information. In order to better help the student the parent information is translated into Spanish. This is not instructional information but parent information. Here is part of the e-mail sent to my family's e-mail address, "In addition to all the advertising, Kim McCarthy and I have been busy talking about our vision of the future for San Juan Capistrano" This message was sent to from: Jim Reardon " How did you obtain my e-mail and do you support Kim McCarthy and Roy Byrnes and the Commen Sense's view of SJC?
Capo Parent October 24, 2012 at 08:10 PM
You are the mother of all questioners. In response to question number one billion from you, likely John I'llpay (should change his name to John I'llpay, I'lllie and I'llcheat to win) and/or Chris Korpi (Mr. Union First aka Children First) given their expertise with misleading domains & webistes. Heck, given Children First's close ties to I'llpay and Korpi, it could have well been Children First!
Dan Avery October 24, 2012 at 08:33 PM
I said "if you want to" clearly you can read into my statement? Hmmm....scary if you can't.
Dan Avery October 24, 2012 at 08:36 PM
Concerned Parent, your comment concerns me. I didn't say he'd be the one to vote for if you want to shake something up and get a higher quality etc. In fact, I very clearly didn't say that. You should try reading what I said very slowly. It will make sense.
Capo Parent October 24, 2012 at 08:36 PM
Maybe your husband gave it to him. Maybe he thought Jim could put to rest at least some of your insistent questions. Maybe the I'llpay volunteer that was at Shorecliff yesterday trade one of the kids waiting in line to be picked up from school an I'llpay sign for your e-mail address.
Dan Avery October 24, 2012 at 08:37 PM
That is a pretty astounding statement Shelly. Wish more were upset by it as you.

Please comment about Kim McCarthy here. It's fair game, but comments specifically about Ms. McCarthy go here: http://sanjuancapistrano.patch.com/articles/sjc-city-council-candidate-statement-kim-mccarthy
shelly October 25, 2012 at 12:10 AM
Capo Mom, No, my husband did not give it to him. How ever Jim Reardon obtained my e-mail address he sent an e-mail this morning promoting Ms. McCarthy and Mr. Byrnes for San Juan Capistrano city council. Mr. Reardon is running for CUSD school board and is supposed to support all children and their parents.Have you ever read Common Sense? Read it sometime. Did you read Kim McCarthy's letter to CUSD. Read it. Here is something from the Capistrano Dispatch that Kim McCarthy wrote, "“So, if you are wondering why you see so many pregnant Latinas and male Latinos not at work, with their well-dressed, well-fed, well-accessorized families, driving their new SUV’s or trucks around town, now you will understand. They come over the border, move in with their families, put their kids in school, are fed breakfast and lunch virtually for free, then they are directed to CHEC who hooks them up with tax-payer funded money and services galore.” Capistrano Dispatch, Kim McCarthy, April 24, 2009. Read her guest opinions. I urge everyone to read these things for themselves. This is the person that Mr. Reardon who is running for school board to represent all of our children is promoting for San Juan Capistrano city council.
shelly October 25, 2012 at 12:11 AM
Capo Mom, Kim McCarthy's opinion is appalling to me and scary.
shelly October 25, 2012 at 01:07 AM
Mr. Reardon is sending e-mails to my house in support of Kim McCarthy. Mr. Reardon is running for CUSD school board. Who he promotes, supports and associates with is very pertinent to voters.
shelly October 25, 2012 at 01:09 AM
Thanks for the link to Kim McCarthy.
concerned parent October 25, 2012 at 01:32 AM
Dan Avery, there's a typo in my statement. I meant to ask why would he NOT be the one to vote for if you wanted to shake up the system and get better education for CUSD? I'm still scratching my head at your statement. Reardon is not a current trustee. He has absolutely nothing to do with CUSD being ranked 113 in the state. He's a major voice against the policies of the majority board. So if you were in favor of change, you'd vote for Reardon. That's why I don't understand your statement.
