O.C. Unemployment Down to 7.7 Percent

Summer vacation decreased government payrolls countywide between July and August.

The unemployment rate in Orange County dipped to 7.7 percent in August, down from a revised 7.9 percent in July, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday.

Payrolls in O.C. decreased by 5,200 jobs, almost entirely the result of a decline in government jobs due to summer, according to the EDD.

A total of 1,388,100 people were employed in Orange County in August, out of a labor force of about 1.6 million, the labor report stated.

Professional and business services reported the largest employment increase in August with the addition of 2,100 jobs overall. Of the growth 80 percent was in administrative and support services, which includes temporary help firms.

Since August 2011, Orange County has gained 29,000 jobs.

In California, the jobless rate for August was 10.4 percent; nationally, 8.2 percent during the same period.

It's too bad that people have to get so defensive and start calling each other names just because they have a difference of opinion.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment percentage includes people no longer receiving benefits, too. The overall unemployment rate takes into account a number of factors, so it's not equivalent to the percentage of people receiving unemployment.

Charles, we don't include city/CDP-level data when reporting on the county's unemployment rate because the percentages are just extrapolations using the population/employment estimates from the last Census. Since populations change—and the Census occurs only once a decade—it's unlikely those estimates are accurate.

@ Sarah - Maybe you should check with the OC Business Journal: "Jobs, Unemployment Rate Both Fell Slightly in August." Jan Yu has the 411 on the jobs picture. 5,200 fewer jobs in August. 12,700 fewer jobs in July. We can all do the Cat Dance over the U3 unemployment rate, but the U6 or LFPR are more meaningful measures. Maybe a more complete explanation is in order??? http://www.ocbj.com/news/2012/sep/21/jobs-unemployment-rate-both-fell-slightly-august/
