OPINION: Councilman Byrnes Seeks to Clarify His Thoughts

The San Juan Capistrano councilman draws parallels to the Nazis and speaks as a "matter of conscience."

As an older person with deep personal recollections of the abominable evils of Nazi oppression in the 1930s, I am very sensitive to the visceral reactions of many people to references to Nazis and the street-bully political acts of that time. The recent street intimidation activities of council members Taylor, and Kramer along with Mayor Allevato evoke parallelisms to that dreadful past, in my opinion.  I condemn these activities.

I have spoken out as a matter of conscience. My remarks were proper and accurate but susceptible to misinterpretation and distortion. If these remarks evoke sad memories or cause distress, I am truly sorry. Such was not my intent
