Ortega Construction Week of April 1

Caltrans workers will begin demolition preparation work this week on half of the Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 Friday.

Crews will begin work to demolish the barrier rail and sidewalk on the north side of the bridge to prep for the demolition of the south side of the bridge this summer. 

To execute these activities safely, crews will perform the first full closure on the northbound I-5 freeway. This closure will begin at 10 p.m. Friday, April 5 and will end on at 6 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

The outside lane in each direction of Ortega Highway between Del Obispo Street and Rancho Viejo Road will continue to be closed nightly during the demolition work.   

Full Freeway Closure(s):

• Full closure of the northbound I-5 freeway between Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road.  
  • Full closure begins on Friday, 4/5 at 10 p.m. and ends Saturday, 4/6 at 6 a.m. 

Lane Reductions: 

• Lane reduction on westbound Ortega Highway (SR-74) between Del Obispo Street and Rancho Viejo Road.
  • Lane closures nightly Wednesday, 4/3 through Saturday 4/6 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.                
• Lane reduction on eastbound Ortega Highway (SR-74) between Del Obispo Street and Rancho Viejo Road.
  • Lane closures nightly Wednesday, 4/3 through Saturday 4/6 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.    
• Lane reduction on northbound I-5 between Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road.
  • Lane closures nightly Thursday. 4/4 through Saturday, 4/6 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  
• Lane reduction on southbound I-5 between Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano.
  • Lane closures beginning Friday, 4/5 at 11 p.m. through Saturday, 4/6 at 5 a.m.     

Ramp Closures: 

• I-5 Southbound off-ramp to Ortega Highway (SR-74) Closed
  • Ramp closed nightly Thursday, 4/4 through Saturday, 4/6 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  
• I-5 Northbound on-ramp from Ortega Highway (SR-74) Closed
  • Ramp closed nightly Wednesday, 4/3 through Saturday, 4/6 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
