Patch to Host SJC City Council Candidates Debate

Mark Oct. 29 on your calendars.

Originally published Oct. 22.

Patch invites you to a debate featuring the candidates for San Juan Capistrano City Council.

The debate will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, 25925 Camino Del Avion in San Juan Capistrano.

All five candidates have been invited.

This will be an authentic debate, not just a candidate’s forum. The candidates will not know the questions in advance. Candidates may have up to two minutes to answer the questions, and others may have a one-minute rebuttal.

Patch Local Editor Penny Arévalo will moderate the debate. If you have any burning questions you would like asked, submit your ideas to penny.arevalo@patch.com.

I highly recommend for our community to attend this debate. It will be very clear as to which candidates truly have our city's best interests at heart and understand all of the true issues.

I agree about attending, but I think in their heart they all want the "city's best interests."
Whiskey Bent October 25, 2012 at 01:49 AM
Have all the candidates rsvp?
Josh Francis October 25, 2012 at 05:43 PM
Penny should ask the candidates what they would offer the swallows to come back? maybe a fee reduction for nest construction?
Lon Uso October 25, 2012 at 05:51 PM
That's hilarious Josh, too bad the redevelopment agency has been dissolved, they could have offered a cash incentive to them, maybe paid them off in chicken feed, lol. As I am sure you all know, the swallows no longer have the necessary building blocks, i.e. mud, available to them downtown to build their nests. There are still thousands of them along SJ creek road, at least for the time being.

Somebody please ask Kim how much she intends to lower water rates? Why she supported stopping every economic development project in SJC including Distrito that was ultimately supported by the great majority of voters? what services does she intends to cut to balance the City budget? etc.... and don't accept the "I'll study it" answer, it's BS
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 28, 2012 at 06:24 PM
Yes, we are expecting all of them. :-)

There is plenty of Mud! We could put 10x10 mud holes with a cool rope thing and a cool plaque that says this is where the Swallows get the mud for their nests! We could pull the Swallow plugs in the tile roofs to give them a place to go!!!! This is not a petty thing, this is history. Our very proud tradition should not be sold short!!!! Bicycle Jim!!!!
Ilse M. Byrnes October 28, 2012 at 11:23 PM
I agree with Bicycle Jim- we have destroyed the natural habitat of the swallows by channelizing the rivers- In Sacramento they ripped out the cement to return the river to it's natural flow and created a beautiful river park by getting rid of unnatural elements Ilse M. Byrnes

The swallow's habitat has been destroyed by the development of the rural brushy areas where all of the new housing has been or will be placed. The California Natcatcher (sp) has disappeared also. They used to live happily with the swallows in the area that they once called Pacific Point. The name has changed so often I can't keep up. They did an impact study for that project and determined that it would be "OK" to remove the habitat, grind it up and later spread it over the area after the project was done and it would bring the birds back. Well, where are they? The council that approved that project is long gone and no one even remembers it unless you were at the council meetings (I was) and listened to how they would fix it all and make things right. I'm paraphrasing. Well I'm still waiting for the birds to return. Aine't gonna happen. The Pacific Point project hasn't happened yet, I've only been here 24 years and I've seen that project go bankrupt at least twice. They removed the habitat years ago and NEVER replaced it.

Sorry, I got off point there for a bit. I can't wait to see how the candidates do in a debate. The BIG ones haven't gone all that well, it will be interesting to see what happens here.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 29, 2012 at 03:23 PM
Hey everyone! Thanks so much for all your emailed questions. I've received DOZENS! We are such an active, informed and engaged town! Many I was already going to ask. I've definitely added some. Some, I just can't get to, not unless you want to make the debate an all-nighter! See you tonight, and thanks for being you!
Jeff Peo October 29, 2012 at 09:45 PM
If you ever want to see a cookie or pie from me again, you'll use my question. anon.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 29, 2012 at 09:52 PM
LOL, I'm being blackmailed with sweets. You all are witnesses!
Lon Uso October 29, 2012 at 09:55 PM
can you webcast it, i would love to watch it live
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 29, 2012 at 09:57 PM
Not this year. Maybe you can get people to tweet during the debate. That would be fun. I'll be a little preoccupied myself ...
Lon Uso October 29, 2012 at 09:57 PM
Penny, as a dentist I recommend you just say no to the sweets
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 29, 2012 at 09:59 PM
OK, no to the sweets, yes to the tweets. Who's in?
Lon Uso October 29, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Ginger Modiri October 30, 2012 at 12:20 AM
For those residents unable to attend this evenings debate/forum, will they be able to see it aired at a later date, perhaps COX cable, etc. ?
John Gamos October 30, 2012 at 12:22 AM
If you were really interested in the debate, you would have made the effort to be here. Instead, you just talk smack and feel sorry for me. Just like my five year old.
Lon Uso October 30, 2012 at 03:48 AM
Well hazel if I was 5 years old and you were my mom, I would probably act out as well. Now we have shared nasty little comments, what have we accomplished?
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 30, 2012 at 03:52 AM
We did not tape it in its entirety. However, we will have video clips and a story. The Register was there, too. :-)
Lon Uso October 30, 2012 at 03:53 AM
Thanks Ginger, that was helpful, I still have a cox account maybe i can watch it online
Penny Arévalo (Editor) October 30, 2012 at 04:01 AM
BTW, it was a blast to see so many concerned citizens come out for the debate. Thank you all for loving this town!
Beverly Blake October 30, 2012 at 06:01 AM
Patch did a great job of creating a professional forum for the debate. Penny you were a focused moderator and kept the humanity alive with your comments... but in check for the candidates. Eric's introductions were succinct and the entire evening was well handled. Thank you for bringing us a sane exposure to our candidates.
Jonathan Volzke October 30, 2012 at 06:15 AM
Good job, Penny and Eric -- not an easy task and you both did it well. The folks I talked to afterward thought it was fair and professional. Jonathan
kathy@oec October 30, 2012 at 03:15 PM
