San Juan Special Election Is June 7

A special election may be consolidated with a state ballot.

The special election in San Juan Capistrano to decide the future of development along La Novia Avenue has been scheduled for June 7.

If Sacramento lawmakers approve a statewide special election giving Californians the opportunity to decide whether they'll extend tax hikes to close the big budget gap, the City Council will attempt to combine San Juan's special election with the state's.

A combined special election will save the city a few thousand dollars, San Juan's city clerk has said. The special election is expected to cost between $76,500 and $85,000.

On June 7, San Juan voters will be asked to consider the project, which calls for commercial and retail space along with homes and an equestrian facility on Valle Road.

This winter, residents challenged the council's approval of that project and circulated a petition calling for a referendum. Although the City Council had the option to repeal its approval of Distrito, it opted to go forward with the special election because "we felt citizens placed their names on that referendum to have it placed on the ballot," Mayor Sam Allevato said.

Allevato and Laura Freese and will write opinion pieces supporting the Distrito project, with Derek Reeve opposing it.
