Two Planning Commissioners Get the Boot

The City Council voted to replace two sitting planning commissioners at its Tuesday meeting.

All five members of the Planning Commission applied for reinstatement, but the council decided to go with two newcomers, Evan Chaffee, a district representative for state Sen. Mark Wyland, and Ian Gardiner, vice president of R.D. Olson Construction in Irvine.

Out are commission Chairman Rob Williams, who briefly considered running for City Council last year, and Jeff Parkhurst. Both serve on the city’s Design Review Committee, which provides guidance to developers on the aesthetics of their proposals.

"I was pleased with all the applicants, and I’m going to be happy no matter how it turns out," said Councilman Larry Kramer before the vote. "We had eight good applicants."

The council was able to get majority votes on four of the five planning commissioners, with Chaffee and Gardiner both getting unanimous support. It then took two votes to come up with a majority vote for the fifth member, long-time Planning Commissioner and attorney Sheldon Cohen.
