House of a 'King' for Sale in San Juan Capistrano

You could own the house of a king in San Juan Capistrano.

The Egan House, the Victorian-ish brick building in downtown San Juan, is for sale.

The Jones Lang LaSalle listing, which describes the property as “a truly unique one-of-a kind, Italianate Victorian historical offering located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano,” does not include a price. While the property has hosted a retail shop, a restaurant and an art gallery, it has remained vacant for a few years now.

It was named after Judge Richard Egan who somewhat ruled the town as judge, mayor and head hauncho. Actress Helena Modjeska dubbed him the "King of San Juan Capistrano."

According to the San Juan Historical Society, Egan was born in Ireland and settled in San Juan Capistrano in 1868. He purchased 160 acres at $1.25 an acre on the north end of town on Camino Capistrano.

He built his house in 1883 and named it Harmony Hall. It was known for the social activities of Judge Egan which included balls, picnics, dinners and parties.

The listing puts the square footage at 3,000 square feet. The house includes a two-car garage and eight parking spaces.
