Capo Delays Launch of New Online High School

The Capistrano Unified School District needs more time to find curriculum and train teachers for West View Academy.

The will not open an online, independent-study high school in the fall as originally planned.

School officials said Wednesday they need more time to select courses, train teachers and find a location to house West View Academy.

The opening "is delayed until fall [2012],” said Marcus Walton, a spokesman for Capistrano Unified. “There will be some classes started in January.” A few more will be offered next summer, and then it will open in earnest the following fall semester.

The board of trustees approved the new high school in April. It was supposed to open with 75 freshmen and 75 sophomores.

Walton said staffers are still vetting online courses to make sure they meet district standards and those of the University of California and California State University systems.

They also need more time to prepare the new teachers for their new assignment, he said.

Additionally, the district still does not have a place to house the academy. Walton said. Even though the students will be taking their courses online, they will be required to meet with a teacher at least once a week.
