Capistrano Unified School District’s mostly aging campuses need more than $1 billion in repairs and upgrades, the superintendent said this week.

Speaking to the trustees at Wednesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Joseph Farley said that many campuses are showing wear.

“We do have facility needs across the entire system that if you were to add up the cost, it’s probably over a billion dollars in modernization and facility work,” Farley said.

The remarks came up during a discussion of goals for the superintendent for the coming year. Farley said the district has managed to accomplish a lot in the last few years of his tenure, especially in the way of educational initiatives, despite Capo facing the “worst economic crises of any school district in California.”
