Most Pink-Slipped Teachers in Capo Get Jobs Back

But the overall number of teachers is still smaller. The retirement incentive offered earlier this year paved the way for returning teachers.

Most pink-slipped teachers will get rehired this year in Capistrano Unified School District; but that doesn’t mean the number of teachers on a campus won’t be smaller come September.

Most of the teachers – – are replacing older teachers who decided to take a district-offered retirement incentive. .

“This is significant, because it is enabling the district to recall a majority of formerly laid-off teachers, and temporary teachers back into their positions,” wrote Clark Hampton, deputy superintendent of business services for CUSD, in a staff report to the Board of Trustees.

“Based on current staffing projections and site master schedules, we will be able to rehire all teachers from re-employments lists except in the areas of art and counseling,” Hampton wrote.

That list indicated there would be 12.6 fewer art teachers and two fewer counselors.

In Hampton’s more recent memo to the board, penned for a Board of Trustee meeting last week, he wrote that as part of the effort to , it resulted in reduction of 75 teaching positions.

The district also needs fewer teachers because of declining enrollment and more families opting for charter schools, Hampton wrote.

The teachers’ union, Capistrano Unified Education Association, is keeping tabs on the pink-slipped teachers as they get rehired. You can view the “re-hire lists” at the CUEA website.

They show seven art teachers still on the list, waiting to be rehired, and 11 counselors. Some lists are more current than others, but they are periodically updated.
