Name Change for New Online High School—What Would You Pick?

Now that the independent-study school's opening has been delayed, Capo Unified trustees say they want to revisit its name.

West View Academy could be out before it was ever in.

The name of Capistrano Unified's new online school "was picked in all due haste,” said school board member John Alpay, who had earlier stated that West View Academy sounded like a school name you'd find in Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks.

Luckily for Alpay, Lynn Hatton and Anna Bryson—who agreed Monday that the board of trustees should consider a new name—the school's opening has been delayed, giving them time to come up with one that sounds a lot sweeter.

“It falls woefully short in terms of marketing,” Alpay said Monday of West View Academy.

The independent study program was initially set to begin in September, but the district has .

When it was originally discussed in April, Superintendent Joseph Farley said the name needed to be selected quickly so the school could apply to participate in California Interscholastic Federation-sanctioned sports.

“I would implore us to reconsider the name now that we have time,” Hatton said. When the topic was first raised at an April board meeting, Hatton complained that the name would not appeal to students outside the area.

“It needs to be far-reaching,” she said Monday.

They requested that the topic be placed on the next board meeting, scheduled for Aug. 24.

IN OTHER NEWS, THE BOARD:

  • Honored two recent graduates, John Nichols of Tesoro High School and Allyson Ward of Dana Hills High, as the only two students from the class of 2011 to have had perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade. Even on “senior ditch day,” Ward said, she preferred to go to class and take her tests. “I don’t like to miss anything.”
  • Awarded a bid to CR&R Waste Services to collect, recycle and dispose of solid waste districtwide. The new contract saves the district $13,000 a month, money that can now be put toward the students, Bryson said.
  • Heard a presentation about the school district’s new online system that allows community groups to reserve schools and other district facilities for private use. Mike Patton, director of transportation, said the new system, live only since July 1, replaces an archaic, paper-laden process that was cumbersome to process and track. “It will be a very nice tool moving forward,” he said.
