News Briefs from Capo Unified

Here's what else happened at the Feb. 13 Board of Trustee meeting.

Seal of Biliteracy

The board approved adding the state seal of biliteracy to students who have achieved proficiency in more than one language. The seal will be available for this year’s graduates. Julie Hatchel, assistant superintendent of education services, said had the honor been awarded last year, about 300 graduates would have received it.

New Principal for Online School

The board hired Jolene Dougherty as the new principal of the district’s virtual high school, California Preparatory Academy. She’ll also oversee alternative programs for the district.

For the last three years, Doughterty has served as one of the administrators for the district’s K-8 home school program, which launched a virtual school.

She replaces Robert Nye, who left Capo for the Carlsbad Unified School District.

Property Negotiations

In closed session, the board discussed property negotiations involving a piece of land next to San Juan Hills High School, due east. The board gave direction to staff, but there was no additional information available.

Other News

In addition, the board heard presentations about the Ortega Highway interchange project and the widening of Avenido Pico interchange, along with a proposal to change attendance boundaries in north Mission Viejo, now that Barcelona Hills Elementary has closed.
