PHOTOS: Crazy Hat Day for a Cause

San Juan Elementary has fun while helping prevent the spread of malaria in Africa.

Crazy hat day has become a staple at elementary schools everywhere. But on Friday, San Juan Elementary had a crazy hat day for a cause.

Students and teachers – and even parents – donned a hat of their choosing for a small donation. The money will be donated to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “bed nets for children in Africa” program.

The CDC Foundation's program helps CDC teams working in Kenya and Haiti purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets to protect children and families from malaria, according to an email sent to San Juan Elementary parents. Malaria is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide. In Africa, a child dies from malaria every 60 seconds.
