School Choice Week: Which Do You Choose?

Registration deadlines for both public, public charter and private schools are coming up. Here's what you need to know.

Since it's National School Choice week – a controversial program that even has its own flash dance – we thought you’d like to know some of the choices you have, especially with fall enrollment just around the corner. Yep. In January.

Capistrano Beach Christian School: Registration for 2013-14 begins Friday. See here for more information.

Capistrano Connections Academy: This is an online charter school and, as such, there are a number of online info sessions for prospective families. Sessions are scheduled for March 7, 15 and 26; April 9, 17 and 22. Go here for more info.

Capistrano Unified: Even though you’re assigned to a neighborhood school, you can open enroll in one of 46 programs across the district. The application period for the language programs in Spanish and Mandarin will run from Monday, Feb. 4 to Friday, Feb. 22. The general open enrollment window for other open schools will be Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 29.

Applications will be available online, at local schools, and at the district headquarters, 33122 Valle Road in San Juan Capistrano. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the district's headquarters. Applications for the Spanish and Mandarin language programs can only be turned in at the school of choice.

Capistrano Valley Christian Schools: Capo Valley Christian is hosting several admissions open houses for interested families. The first is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7; 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8; and 6:30 p.m.., Thursday, Feb. 21.

Community Roots Academy: Registration has begun for this charter school. A lottery may be held in March. See here for more info.

Journey School: This charter school's registration ends Feb. 28. A public lottery is scheduled for March 14. See here for more info.

JSerra Catholic High School: Applications are due Friday. Applications are accepted online here

McDowell School:  Registration began Jan. 7. For more information, go here.

Mission Basilica School: Registration begins in early March, but you are invited to call and put your name on our waiting list at any time. For new students to our school, we give a grade-specific assessment exam before registration or acceptance.

Oxford Preparatory Academy: The charter school has not yet announced its registration calendar for 2013-14. See here for more info.

Saddleback Valley Christian Schools: Open enrollment begins Feb. 1. Applications are considered based on the admission application, academic record from previous two years, student recommendations from the (a) teacher who is your student's current academic classroom teacher and (b) administrator of your student's current school, placement testing and a family/student interview with the SVCS school administrator.

St. Edward the Confessor Parish School: Registration began in October for 2013-14, and testing is scheduled for Feb. 5-7. Go here for more info.
