Tesoro Principal Announces Retirement

Dr. Dan Burch, who opened the high school in 2001, will step down at the end of the 2013 school year.

Dr. Dan Burch, the principal who opened Tesoro High and helped it become one of California's distinguished schools, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2013 school year.

Burch had been principal at Capistrano Valley High when he was chosen as Tesoro's founding principal. Tesoro opened in the fall of 2001, the first high school built in the Capistrano Unified School District since 1993 when Aliso Niguel opened.

Burch made the announcement on Wednesday during an all-staff meeting, and then followed with an email to the Tesoro community.

Below is the content of that email:

After 13 wonderful years as Principal of Tesoro and 38 years as an educator, I am ready to move into a new chapter of my life. At the end of the school year in June, I will retire from CUSD. What I have gained from my relationships with students, parents, staff and community cannot be measured or expressed.

I am confident that the foundation for ongoing success is in place and that the district will select a candidate who will maintain and build on what we have already accomplished.

I give you my unending gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

Humbly and gratefully,

Dan Burch
