You Name It: New School in Rancho Mission Viejo

What would you propose if you were in charge?

With the sales of homes in the first village at Rancho Mission Viejo now underway, the Capistrano Unified School District is starting to make plans for the first of several new schools.

One of the first big decisions: What to call the first school.

“There will come a time in the future where it will be helpful to have a name to refer to,” said Superintendent Joseph Farley at last week’s Board of Trustee meeting.”

For now, as new families start to move into Rancho Mission Viejo -- as early as the end of this summer, according to ranch officials -- the children will attend existing schools. But school officials have tabulated the enrollment for the eventual 14,000 homes, which will generate:

  • 2,724 K-5 students
  • 991 middle school students
  • 846 high schoolers

District officials are considering two new K-8 schools and a traditional K-5 elementary to accommodate most of the students.

Normally, the school board assigns a few members to sit on a committee to come up with names. But last week, so many trustees said they wanted to participate, that they will convene a special meeting just to talk about names.
