Baseball: Capo Valley Christian Wins Semis In A Runaway

Playoffs: The Eagles explode in the middle innings, setting up a rematch for the championship with the team that beat them a year ago.

The rematch is on.

Capistrano Valley Christian, beaten a year ago in the Southern Section Baseball Championships, will get a chance to avenge that loss on Saturday.

The third-seeded Eagles advanced to the title game with a 13-2 runaway victory over Downey Calvary Chapel on Tuesday at San Juan Sports Park.

Capo Valley Christian (24-8) will play for the Division 6 title on Saturday, 4 p.m., at UC Riverside against top-seeded Bermuda Dunes Desert Christian Academy (28-2), which scored a 12-4 victory over fourth-seeded La Canada Flintridge Prep.

Desert Christian has won 14 in a row since a 6-3 loss to Perris Citrus Hill.
When they played for the title last year, Desert Christian beat CVC in eight innings, 4-2.

Capo Valley Christian and Calvary Chapel were tied at 2-2 headed into the fourth inning, but CVC scored four in the fourth, six in the fifth and one for good measure in the sixth.

The scoring onslaught made a winner of sophomore pitcher A.J. Discenzo (5-1), who gave up five hits and a walk over six innings; he struck out four before being replaced by Brad Peoples.

It also continued a healthy pattern for success in the playoffs. Only once in four playoff games have the Eagles scored fewer than 13 runs—a 6-4 decision over Chatsworth Sierra Canyon in the second round. In the other three contests, they have outscored their opponents, 51-3.

Discenzo did himself some favors at the plate. He had two hits, including a two-run double to tie the score in the second inning, and five runs batted in. Zach Anast added two RBIs, and Parker Cross homered.

Willie Quiros, D.J. Sutorius and Jacob Upton also drove in runs.

Calvary Chapel (19-7) scored twice in the top of the first inning.
