Football: Playoff Roundup, Second Round

Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach may be headed for a collision course as local teams take it on the chin.

Cayman Carter rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as top-seeded Corona del Mar scored a 26-0 victory over Los Amigos in the second round of the Southern Section’s Southern Division playoffs.

The Sea Kings (10-2) took another step toward repeating as  the section champion.

Carter scored on two 1-yard runs and he also passed 5 yards to Troy Reese.

Corona del Mar also got a safety and a 28-yard field goal by Grif Amies. The shutout is Corona del Mar’s second in a row and third in its last five games.

Los Amigos finished 8-4.

The Sea Kings will face Woodbridge (7-5) in the semifinals. In a game earlier this season, CdM defeated Woodbridge, 33-16.

Drake Martinez scored on runs of 50, 2 and 64 yards, but it was Larry Stewart’s 12-yard pass to Jake Hexberg with four seconds remaining that lifted the second-seeded Breakers (11-0-1) past Northwood. Martinez rushed for 264 yards. Laguna  Beach will play Garden Grove in the semifinals of the Southern Division.

 Villa Park 26, Newport Harbor 21

The third-seeded Spartans (11-1) scored twice in the fourth quarter, the last time with 1:57 remaining, to outlast Newport Harbor (7-5).  Following Quest Truxton’s 84-yard punt return and Landon Gyulay’s 53-yard pass reception from Cole Norris, Tala Teaupa gave Newport a 21-14 lead with a 19-yard run with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter.  Justin Mottrom scored from a yard with 1:57 remaining to give Villa Park the victory. The Spartans will play second-seeded Tustin (12-0) in the semifinals of the Southwest Division.

Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World 28, St. Margaret’s 14

Josh Davis ran for 62 yards and passed 67 yards to Andrew Torok to give St. Margaret’s a 14-7 lead, but the host team got four touchdowns from Jacob Taylor to upset the second-seeded Tartans (10-2). Taylor rushed for 327 yards. Rim of the World (10-2) will play third-seeded Banning in the semifinals of the East Valley Division. Read more at the Redlands Daily Facts.

Defending Pac-5 champion Santa Margarita scored twice in the final three minutes to tie the score, but couldn't muster a matching offense in the overtime against top-seeded St. Bonaventure (11-1), which avenged its only loss of the season. Kyle Sweet rushed for two touchowns and passed for another in a losing cause for the Eagles (9-3). 

Poly is headed to the semifinals for the first time since 2008 after upsetting the Pac-5 Division's second-seeded Diablos. Mission Viejo (11-1) lost for the first time this season.
