Football: Roundup of O.C. Playoff Divisions, Including Pac-5

Southern Section playoffs: Mater Dei upsets third-seeded Long Beach Poly to set up an all-Trinity League final.

The Southern Section football playoffs completed the semifinal round of its 13 divisions, including five that included teams from Orange County Patch cities. 

Here's a roundup of those divisions. 

Pac-5 Division

St. John Bosco 56, Mission Hills Alemany 14—Josh Rosen threw touchdown passes of 10, 27 and 14 yards as top-seeded Bosco (13-0) opened up a 28-0 lead. Nas Anesi added three short scoring runs, for the Braves, whose defense allowed only an 80-yard scoring run to fourth-seeded Alemany (10-3); the other score came on an interception return to pull to 28-14 early in the third quarter.

Mater Dei 30, Long Beach Poly 0—Chase Forrest passed 154 yards and touchdowns, of 23, 4 and 90 yards, and Justin Allen peeled off a 75-yard run to send Mater Dei (10-3) to the finals for the second year in a row. Third-seeded Poly (11-2) also gave up a field goal to Johnathan Shenk from 24 yards in a rematch of last year’s title game.

Southwest Division

Newport Harbor 28, Fullerton 17—Cole Norris passed for touchdowns of 11 and 14 yards—to Quest Truxton and Cory Stowell, respectively—and Riley Gaddis returned an interception 57 yards as the Sailors (8-5) earned their first trip to the finals since winning in 2005. Fullerton, the third-place team from the Freeway League, finished 10-3.

Huntington Beach 28, Edison 21—Travis Heer rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, a 43-yarder early in the first quarter and a 24-yarder with 1:22 left in the third quarter, that lifted the Oilers (8-5) to their first final since 1993. Huntington Beach, which finished fifth in the Sunset League, also got two 4-yard TD passes from Kai Ross to build a 20-0 lead before third-seeded Edison (9-4) came back on the strength of Marcus Swanigan scoring runs of 2 and 50 yards, and Matthew Gane’s 19-yard TD pass.  When they played during league, Edison had beaten Huntington Beach, 48-6. 

Southern Division

Corona del Mar 37, Westminster 14—Luke Napolitano passed for 159 yards and one touchdown, and ran for another, and Cole Martin rushed for 140 yards, including a 63-yard score, as the top-seeded Sea Kings (13-0) won their 23rd in a row. Fourth-seeded Westminster (8-5), down by 37, scored twice in the fourth quarter.  CdM is vying for its third consecutive championship. 

Garden Grove 49, Irvine 27—Angel Martinez passed for touchdowns of 41 and 58 yards, and ran for a 1-yard score that gave second-seeded Garden Grove (13-0) a 21-0 lead. Sionne Masoe, who caught the 58-yard TD pass, also scored on runs of 2, 57 and 6 yards as the Argonauts earned a rematch of last year’s championship. Third-seeded Irvine outscored Grove 27-22 in the fourth quarter. 

East Valley Division 

Fontana Jurupa Hills 40, Western Christian 39—Damion Wright passed 1 yard to Kourde Roberts with four seconds remaining, and Oscar Molina—after missing a pair of kicks earlier—booted the PAT for the top-seeded Spartans (11-2). Fourth-seeded Western Christian (12-1) had scored about six minutes earlier but were turned back on a two-point conversion attempt. 

St. Margaret’s 35, Big Bear 28 (OT)—Josh Davis rushed for touchdowns of 1, 18, 42 and 10 yards, the latter in overtime, to send the second-seeded Tartans (12-1) to the title game for the first time since 2009. Davis, who rushed for 166 yards and passed for 173, also had a 26-yard scoring pass to Charlie Beall against the third-seeded Bears (10-3).

Northeast Division

San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 51, Edwards AFB Desert 30—Patrick Laird scored from 70 yards and Evan Talbert was on the receiving end of a 90-yard scoring pass as the top-seeded Royals (11-2) held off fourth-seeded Desert (10-3).

Salesian 35, Rio Hondo Prep 20—The third-seeded Mustangs (11-2) got a 52-yard scoring run from Felipe Meza in the fourth quarter to hold off second-seeded Rio Hondo (11-2).
