JSerra's Girls Basketball Team Is in It for the Long Haul

Lady Lions score a 54-37 victory over Sierra in a first-round game of the Southern California Region Division IV state playoffs Tuesday evening at Sierra High in Tollhouse.

The bus trip Tuesday for JSerra's first-round game of the Southern California Region Division IV state girls basketball playoffs covered 300 miles and took about six hours, but that didn't seem to adversely affect the Lady Lions, whose strong second half carried them to a 54-37 victory over host Sierra, which is located in Tollhouse, a city in Fresno County.

Instead, the 10-day layoff between games may have been the reason for JSerra's slow start Tuesday. The ninth-seeded Lady Lions (13-18) led eight-seeded Sierra, 29-23, at halftime.

In St. Margaret's previous game, played Feb. 26, the Lions lost in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division 4A playoffs, 78-63, to St. Anthony's of Long Beach, which went on to win the division championship.

Sophomore guard August Touchard scored a game-high 21 points with three assists Tuesday for the Lady Lions, and sophomore forward Julia Kenefick had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 12 points.

St.  Margaret's hits the road again on Thursday, but this time headed in the opposite direction for a second-round game at top-seeded La Jolla Country Day (35-4).
