San Juan Hills Hires Commins to Coach Girls Basketball

San Clemente graduate leaves similar position at Dana Hills to take over struggling Stallions program.

Taryn Commins, who played basketball at San Clemente High under coach Mary Mulligan, has been hired to coach the girls basketball team at San Juan Hills High, athletic director Armando Gonzalez announced Wednesday.

She replaces Cat Nolan, who stepped down as girls basketball coach in order to focus on her teaching and assignment and duties as the school's girls track and field coach.

Commins served the past two seasons as girls basketball coach at Dana Hills, where she led the Dolphins to a 15-12 record and a share of their first South Coast League title in 2009-10 and a third-place finish this past season, when they posted a 15-8 record.

She previously served as an assistant coach at San Clemente under Mulligan after graduating from Concordia University, where she played four years and earned All-America honors as a junior and senior.

Currently working on the San Juan Hills campus as a classified employee in the discipline office, Commins will inherit a Stallions team that struggled to an 0-18 record in its first two seasons of league play.
