SJC's Jen Kessy Handily Dismisses Argentina in Olympic Action

Kessy and partner April Ross win a two-straight set victory Sunday in beach volleyball.

San Juan Capistrano’s lone representative at the London Olympics, Jennifer Kessy, and her beach volleyball partner April Ross played their debut match Sunday, handily taking care of a team from Argentina.

The Argentinians started out slowly, allowing Kessy and Ross to tidy up the first set, 21-11. The South Americans got their groove back the second set, but not in time to stop a 21-18 victory for the Americans.

“We out-powered them,” Kessy told NBC after the match. “We came in and started hitting as hard as we could, and serving. We started off with two aces. You can’t ask for anything more.”

Kessy and Ross are seeded fourth but only have gold on their minds. They next play 3 p.m. Tuesday.

In an interview with an NBC broadcaster, Kessy said her team’s narrow loss to make the Beijing Olympics “motivated everything that we did” to make the Olympics 2012 team.

“We did not want to have that feeling again, missing it by 60 points or something,” she said. “Now we’re here, living the dream.”
