Sports Notes: CVCS Football Players Elect Team Captains

His Eagles teammates voted junior Alex Colombo as their captain for the 2011 season and named four others as co-captains.

The football players at have elected junior lineman Alex Colombo as their captain for the 2011 season, coach Dan Dodd announced Thursday.

The Eagles also elected junior Alex Thacker, junior Kean Coleman, junior Luke Stevens and senior Brody Babick as co-captains. Colombo will represent the Eagles for every pregame coin toss at midfield, where he will be joined by two co-captains, who will alternate the duties each week.

CVCS opens its eight-man season on Saturday with a nonleague game against San Jacinto Academy at . Kickoff is 7 p.m.

, having previously served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Tulane University in New Orleans, said he will start freshman Riley Babick (5-10, 186) at quarterback on Saturday.

Last Saturday, the Eagles held a scrimmage and Dodd said he was impressed with the play at linebacker of Stevens, an All-Express League pick last season, and that freshman wide receiver AJ Discenzo also had a good night. Dodd said they spent “a ton of time on special teams, so I expect that to be a point of strength for us.”

Stallions Top JSerra in Girls Golf

San Juan Hills’ girls golf team defeated JSerra on a nonleague match, 241-277, Wednesday at Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano. However, JSerra’s Samantha Balsz was the medalist, shooting a nine-over-par 44 on the course’s front nine.
