WATCH: Rare Sighting of Fin Whales

According to Capt. Dave Anderson, the whales were spotted Dec. 1 near the Dana Point coastline.

Two fin whales, the second largest whale species with lengths that can rival a small blue whale, wowed whale watchers aboard Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari on Dec. 1.

The two whales were seen feeding on surface krill, a small shrimp-like crustacean, off the coast of Dana Point in front of Ritz-Carlton, reported Capt. Dave Anderson.

"Our whale-watching passengers and crew were especially thrilled when the two whales, while our boat was in neutral and stationary, decided to swim directly in front of our bow giving us a rare up-close and unforgettable look at one of the biggest animals in the world," said Anderson.
