On Thursday, Aug. 29, crews will restripe the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Ortega Highway from two lanes to one lane. This configuration will last for several months and is necessary to reconstruct the off-ramp and perform other construction activities in the area, according to Caltrans.
As part of the bridge reconstruction, crews will begin pile driving at the Ortega Highway overpass as early as Monday. This activity will take place on weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. intermittently for several weeks, weather permitting.
Caltrans notes that this work may be loud and disruptive due to vibration and pounding.
Pile driving is the process of driving concrete beams, or piles, deep into the earth in search of a hard foundation for a freeway bridge, according to Caltrans.
More than 80 piles will be used on Ortega, a Caltrans press release says.
Caltrans is also asking drivers to be patient as many private schools are starting in the coming week.
