On a light commuting day Friday, southbound drivers wanting to exit the I-5 Freeway at Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano were backed up to Junipero Serra Road.
Early Friday morning, workers reconfigured the southbound off-ramp from its existing three lanes down to one. Caltrans officials say the squeeze is on until close to the 2 1/2-year project's end, when Ortega Highway is realigned to flow into Del Obispo Street.
The freeway's auxiliary lane that exclusively exited at Ortega merges with the lane next to it, which offers the option to ex to remain on the freeway.
The big question is, what will it be like after families return from vacations, parents get back to work, private schools start Monday and public schools start Tuesday? z
