Bad Beef: Company Recalls 8.7 Million Pounds of Meat Products

Nearly 9 million pounds of beef have been recalled because of the use of unhealthy animals and a failure to have the meat fully inspected.

More than 8.7 million pounds of beef is being recalled because diseased and unhealthy animals were used and without a complete federal inspection, the Huffington Post reported.

Rancho Feeding Company in Petaluma, Calif. is recalling the beef because it processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection, the Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

The meat was processed by Rancho Feeding Corp. between Jan. 1 2013 and Jan. 7 2014 and shipped to California, Florida and Illinois.

The beef products all have the "EST. 527" in the USDA mark of inspection and a case code ending in 3 or 4, CNN reported.

Last month the company recalled more than 40,000 pounds of meat products produced on Jan. 8 that also didn't undergo a full inspection, the Huffington Post story said.

The recall includes the following products, listed on the Food Safety and Inspection Service website

  • "Beef Carcasses” (wholesale and custom sales only)
  • 2 per box "Beef (Market) Heads" (retail only)
  • 4-gallons per box "Beef Blood" (wholesale only)
  • 20-lb. boxes of “Beef Oxtail”
  • 30-lb. boxes of “Beef Cheeks”
  • 30-lb. boxes of " Beef Lips"
  • 30-lb. boxes of "Beef Omasum"
  • 30-lb. boxes of "Beef Tripas"
  • 30-lb. boxes of "Mountain Oysters"
  • 30-lb. boxes of "Sweet Breads”
  • 30- and 60-lb. boxes of “Beef Liver”
  • 30- and 60-lb. boxes of “Beef Tripe”
  • 30- and 60-lb. boxes of “Beef Tongue”
  • 30- and 60-lb. boxes of "Veal Cuts"
  • 40-lb. boxes of "Veal Bones"
  • 50-lb. boxes of “Beef Feet”
  • 50-lb. boxes of “Beef Hearts”
  • 60-lb. boxes of "Veal Trim"

One can be assured that isn't an isolated incident. The idea that people in our government are protecting us is a farace. I am willing to bet that this company will get a slap on the wrist and continue doing what they have always done. Businesses have been slaughtering "downer" animals since commercial production began. I am not a vegan, but am not as enthused to eat meat as I once was. The problem is, in order to make more money, producers are giving us genetically engineered fruits and vegetables, and chemicals that may cause unknown consequences.

I wouldn't eat this stuff, but I'm glad the entire animal is being used. Well, theoretically. Not in this case anyway. 8.7 million pounds of animals killed for nothing.
