2. San Juan was between ‘Heaven and Earth’: Caught the last movie of the West Coast Film Festival. It was phenomenal. The movie -- which I had never seen before because I’m somewhat of a delicate thing when it comes to violence and torture in movies – is based on the autobiography of Le Ly Hayslip … who was also present for the movie. The story is so horrific and yet hopeful at the same time. Hayslip said the first time she saw it on the big screen, she couldn’t even move or talk. Friends had to walk her out of the theater. She says she has a similar reaction each time she sees it.3. Happy Labor Day: Not only are the construction workers building the new bridge over Ortega Highway taking the holiday off, so is City Hall. City Hall and the Community Center will be closed on Monday. These offices will reopen on Tuesday, September 3 at 7:30 a.m. We hope everyone enjoys their holiday.
4. The start of school: Public school may not start until next week – it seems really late this year, doesn’t it? – but elementary students find out who their teachers are on Friday. The lists are typically posted at the schools late afternoon. (Check with your school, it varies slightly at different campuses.)5. Patch read of the day: Update: Yacht Hits Balboa Pier, No Injuries Reported
