As the number for U.S. Border and Customs Enforcement agents has grown, so has the poundage of drugs seized and number of human smugglers potentially deterred.
Editor’s note: This is the first in a three-part series examining drug smuggling, human smuggling and human trafficking in the San Diego and Orange County area, and how federal and local law enforcement agencies are grappling with the problem. Under the affluent veneer of Orange and San Diego counties, thousands risk death, ransom and modern slavery to enter the country without documentation. Others use muddy border tunnels, rickety fishing boats and secret compartments to haul tons of cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana along the I-5 and other highway corridors, or through beach landings. Just this week off Dana Point, the Border Patrol recovered hundreds of bales of marijuana worth more than $3 million on the street. Law enforcement …

Men who ride bicycles may experience hormonal imbalances that could affect their reproductive health, researchers say in a UCLA School of Nursing study released today. To date, an extensive amount of research has been performed documenting the positive effects of long-term exercise on health, according to a nursing school statement. These studies have shown that while moderate exercise can lead to enhanced cardiovascular and metabolic function and reduced body fat, ultra- endurance levels of exercise can also adversely affect the neuroendocrine system and reproductive health,'' the statement said. The UCLA study explored the associations between exercise intensity and circulating levels of reproductive hormones in serious leisure male …

December and January.
Orange County prosecutors announced today they will seek the death penalty for a former Marine accused of killing six people. Itzcoatl Ocampo, 24, of Yorba Linda, is accused of killing a mother and her adult son last October, then fatally stabbing four homeless men between December and January in what prosecutors called thrill killings. He remains jailed without bail and is tentatively scheduled to go on trial Sept. 10. Ocampo is charged with the Oct. 25 slayings of Raquel Estrada, 53, and her son, Juan Herrera, 34, and the fatal stabbings of four homeless men starting Dec. 20. The first homeless victim was 53-year-old James McGillivray, who was attacked as he slept outside a Placentia shopping center on Dec. 20. Eight days later, …
Local symposium will cap Lupus Awareness Month
When writer Flannery O’Connor was diagnosed with lupus in 1950 at age 25, the autoimmune disease was poorly understood, often confused with arthritis. O’Connor braved debilitating pain, immobility, and fatigue with her characteristic humor at times, calling her crutches “flying buttresses.” But she grumbled in a letter about a nurse who patronizingly advised, “Honey, take up knitting, and you won’t notice the pain.” Shortly before her death at 39, she bleakly apologized for feeling “too bad” to type the latest stories she had written. Some O’Connor scholars believe that the dark, violent images in this seemingly mild-mannered and prim Southern woman’s novels and stories serve as metaphors for the illness that was attacking her body and …

People throughout Southern California gathered individually and in groups Sunday to take in the enthralling view of a late afternoon 85-percent eclipse of the sun. The annular eclipse started at 5:24 p.m. and ended at 7:42 p.m., according to Griffith Observatory officials. During an annular eclipse, the moon does not block the entirety of the sun, but leaves a bright ring of light visible at the edges. In Sunday's eclipse, the moon was at the furthest distance from Earth that it ever achieves -- meaning that it blocked the smallest possible portion of the sun, leaving the largest possible bright ring around the outside. It was the first annular eclipse visible in the U.S. in nearly 18 years, according to NASA, and National Geographic …
