I've know Chris Philips for many years, and am sadened by the loss for SanJuan and the FiestaRead More Association. Chris never had an unkind word for anyone and was a real true cowboy at heart. I wish for Carmen to be well and stay blessed. Nina

I lost my daughter to a rare brain cancer in '05 she was 18 and a real pleasant young lady to beRead More around...so I do understand.

Chris was a true gentleman and had respect for everyone he met and a deep respect for his country.Read More He held out a lot longer than any of us that were aware of his situation had thought he would. He had battled cancer off and on most of his life and he did it in a way that showed how brave he really was. He was very spiritual and I know that he found peace in the end. Is spirit will live in our community forever and I hope pictures of his sheriff years will always be shown in the parade years to come

What a stupid comment to place in an obituary.

Robert Citron the only democrat politician in Orange County had us write out our property taxesRead More checks to him personally! Hmmmm......Putting a dem in charge of the people's money is like putting a fox in charge of the hen house!

You obviously do not know Rick Warren or the works and causes he has supported and personallyRead More contributed to throughout the years, including helping the mentally ill, or you wouldn't make such an ignorant and/or uninformed comment. Amazing the lack of compassion some people can have at such a sad and difficult time for Rick and his family.
M April 10, 2013 at 10:44 am
I don't think Rick warren or his church need any more "donations". If anything Rick warrenRead More should be donating his funds to organization that help the mentally ill.

I was lucky to have met Annette a few times. She was a very warm and considerate person to everyoneRead More she came in contact with. Her smile lit up the room. May she RIP.

Scott Raftery was a delight to work with. He did not insulate himself in a press box, but would meetRead More the people and athletes he worked for. He was also a pro, and really "got it." At one of his first softball finals as an administrator, a coach from El Modena acted like a jerk, totally didn't get the "Pursuing victory with honor" mantra of the CIF; as I recall the incident, Raftery fired off a letter to inform him and his principal that if he didn't clean up his act, he wouldn't be allowed back. The Southern Section office lost a champion.
Brenda February 25, 2013 at 03:30 pm
RIP Mr. Rafferty. Far to young to loose you and we must work harder to find a cure for cancer.
rfirefly February 25, 2013 at 12:37 pm
Sounds like a great guy. RIP Mr. Rafferty.

Alleged ? Really, lets stop with the political correctness....He flat out murdered them in coldRead More blood. He is no hero, he was a coward and deserved the ending that he reaped in the mountains...Respect those who were his victims including police officers and innocent people who were the victims of this sociopath. Thanks

What a disgusting discourse on a nice old lady's passing. She had nothing to do with the President'sRead More mis deeds. If you can't say anything nice about someone, in death for God's sakes, then just be quiet. You must be a very unhappy person.
JustUs January 20, 2013 at 05:03 pm
Just for the record, I am not a liberal, Amerikanish. In fact, quite the opposite, friend. I justRead More hate liars and crooks, regardless of political affiliation. I am a rare bird in that regard. And I approve this message.
AMERIKANISCH January 20, 2013 at 04:15 pm
Nixon was actually very liberal. Affirmative action and bussing minorities to "white"Read More schools happened under Nixon's administration. Also, Nixon ended the Vietnam War- not soon enough, of course, but it was LBJ who escalated it to huge proportions. Of course, since he had a "D" by his name, he gets a free pass from this rather partisan and myopic crowd. Nixon is the Republican that liberals love to hate, but in truth he was rather liberal himself.
JustUs January 22, 2013 at 01:37 am
Not me. I think Moorlach's a jerk. You're "out of here" because you weren't able toRead More intelligently offer a counterargument to my previous comment. So long...........
Ginelle Dexter January 22, 2013 at 01:27 am
Yeah, and you all in the OC think Moorlach walks on water. He's of the same mold as Raabe. HowRead More much of the county's money did he waste on lawyers trying to fight a lost cause against the Sheriff Dept? Said my peice...I'm out of here.
JustUs January 22, 2013 at 01:02 am
I don't care if you were bonded with him at the hip at birth, Ginelle. Citron failed miserable atRead More his fiduciary obligation to the citizens of Orange County and should have done 5 years or more in state prison for his crimes. A man doesn't pled guilty to 6 felonies unless he has done something terribly wrong. And he was in charge of the public treasure, whether you like it not. Trying to pass off Citron's failings on another human being is totally wrong and a grave insult to the Orange County taxpayers. I understand that you probably had an emotional bond with Citron. We didn't and don't. All we know is that he hurt many people with his hairbrained investment schemes and should NEVER have been in a position of so much financial trust and responsibility. On top of that, he was very weird IMO.
Sue Westfall December 23, 2012 at 08:38 pm
If you didn't know Don you should not comment. He was a kind and generous man - was he perfect...no,Read More no one is. He took responsibility for his mistakes and paid dearly for them. He was always kind, loving and generous to our family and he had a rye sense of humor - we will miss him. May he rest in peace.

I rarely see any arguments that are very strong to support the sex offender registry or these kindRead More of laws. I believe it's because of the facts and common (not so common) sense. It's hard for a position to stand when the argument is based on what-if possibilities and emotions when reason and facts are in total opposition. TRUTH
Dan Avery December 20, 2012 at 03:07 pm
Actually, Chris, where I was going isn't where you think. What our society does with anything itRead More doesn't understand is simply lock it up, or try to make it disappear. We are talking about sick individuals who have always been with us since the day we crawled out of the slime. We still don't have a clue as to what drives them. And we should. Understanding something like this wouldn't be that hard if we put our collective minds to the task and applied some common decent humanity as we studied the problem. In other words, the "Scarlet Letter" approach you keep pitching doesn't work, it has never worked, and it will never work because it's simplistic, hollow and cruel.
Dan Avery December 20, 2012 at 03:01 pm
Well said. Especially the last sentence. The DA's "sidekick," as you've calledRead More Councilwoman Schlicht is as simplistic as this law. If you live in Mission Viejo you really need to become acquainted with her by visiting http://protectmissionviejo.com. Oh look, they decorated the site for the holidays!

Did you watch a lot of television growing up?
mocker November 24, 2012 at 06:30 pm
I am moved to tears by this mans passing. He portrayed a good guy, falling all over genie trying toRead More control her next ill informed move yet never succeeding. Yet never giving up and never tiring of the girl he loved. I relate to that. He was able to portray a man who could live w/o controversy or enemies and yet have to hide so much from those who were looking a little to closely. On the other side was JR Ewing. A soap opera in prime time. ??...it single-handedly ended my watching network tv on a regular basis. As a young adult, I was able for the first time to make my own decision to break away from mind numbing network programming. Then came HBO and cable and I never went back. Only today with the very sad news of the death of Larry Hagman, was I finally informed who really shot JR. I already forgot or I would tell you. I hope his next mission with Major Healey is a good one. You don't find a jeanie like Barbara Eden every day. Luckily its a grand cosmos.

A few years back it was DDT. The liberal environment people convinced forward thinkers like theRead More ones backing Prop. 37 to come out against DDT. As usual the people who suffered the most were the ones least able to protect themselves. Many have died in third world countries because all the smart people came out against DDT. Now you have these same people going after GMO. Keep coming up with all these dangers and eventually you will make food a scarce item. Living in abundance is not an accident. If you outlaw everything that protects crops eventually we will reduce the abundanced we have. If people regect GMO foods, competitors will advertise they are GMO free and we don't pay for another government agency to save us. Trust yourself not the some bureaucrat. Jasper, Prop. 32 is not backed by a business. Prop 32 stops big business and Unions.

Scott Brown (R-MA), one of 10 senators to sign a letter asking the FDA to loosen regulations on the drug compounding industry. Raw Story (http://s.tt/1rS8s)"

"McGovern is the American Hotdog" -- the campaign slogan for a rally we held at OrangeRead More Coast College in 1972. There weren't many of us liberal Dems in Orange County back then (OC has come a long way). George McGovern and his presidential campaign inspired me, my family and friends to get politically active and assertively support Democratic candidates and issues. Thank you, Mr. McGovern. You will be missed. Peace.

Jim, Eugene McCarthy was also from Minnesota. But while Humphrey was merely a politician and, inRead More the words of Hunter S. Thompson, a douche bag...McCarthy was a poet warrior. Thompson had Hubert's number. We need more McCarthy's, especially today. Humphrey was a "nice" man who worked inside the system to do whatever good he could do. But as Met points out above, that's not really enough. We need the poet warriors who live near the edge in order to turn this ship in the proper direction. Yeah I know that was a mixed metaphor. But it's good to struggle with images no? :)

I was married to Bill for 10 years. He was such a kind, sweet, soul and even though things did notRead More work out for us, I had always hoped he had found happiness and peace. I saw him last on his 50th birthday. Reading about his tragic, senseless death breaks my heart. I wish he had found what he was looking for. He was very smart and he could be so funny. Bill, please rest in peace and I pray you are in the arms of our Lord.

This has devested me I don't understand why he did this? I saw him that day at Bank of America. I'mRead More a hair dresser and I was going into Malys to but product but I was so happy when I saw bill it had been a few months at the most so I didn't go into Malys I jumped into my car with my little dog. Button. I was so excited to see him when I pulled up in front of him he was speaking to someone who he knew a male. I jumped out of my car with my desest sisters dog and rollers in my hair. He always called me by last name Preble. But not this time I gave him a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek and said how r you? I said ha ha do you want this dog? And he said no where did you get that dog? And I said She was my sisters dog, Button. And I'm not a dog person I asked him if he wanted Button he said no no. He didn't look well at all he had lost alot of weight and told me personal things that had failed in his life. I take blame because I was in such a god dam hurry to get to work and I knew there was something devesyating wrong. I knew it in my heart I loved him I asked him to come see my mom and I at my shop that day. It's pretty much killing me and I no it's not about me but he was my dearest friend I loved him and I always will. Bills death has taken a sparke out of my heart forever. I will never be the same. May God bless this kind man.

Kim, you do noble work on behalf of surviving parents. The story of Nigel's death and his highRead More school buddy Carlos Aragon in the same company within three days of each other brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. I was washing dishes at the Colony Kitchen with Tommy Littman. We kept ducking into the Crest Room,Read More that's where the TV was. I remember standing there looking down the bar & seeing Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. Margie Oehlert, Paul's Mom, was standing in front of me. A never to be forgotten experience.

Is this the Janet who used to write for the Press Telegram or in Long Beach?
Janet Whitcomb August 26, 2012 at 07:20 pm
I think everyone was on pins and needles the entire day. It was a relief to know Armstrong andRead More Aldrin had landed. But then the second stage of anxiety began. When Armstrong left the capsule and said his famous words, the sense of relief was palpable throughout the nation . . . perhaps the world. Still, I don't believe anyone felt 100% secure until all three men were retrieved after splashdown and, once a period of quarantine was over, allowed to become (if you'll excuse my Warner Bros. cartoon jargon) earthlings again. About a minute after Armstrong stepped out onto the moon, I went outside and stared up at it in wonderment. It was a warm night and the universe seemed especially accessible. I remember feeling only slightly jealous of those at Disneyland, who had the opportunity to watch the whole thing on a large screen set up in Tomorrowland. Some time later I remember my mom reading a magazine and quoting the quote Charles mentions. She seemed to think it a justification for not exercising! But obviously Armstrong had to have been in tip-top shape to do all that he did.

Interesting, Janet. Might be fun to watch these in succession: Mr. Smith Goes to WashingtonRead More (1939) A Face In The Crowd (1957) Network (1976) To Die For (1995) Roughly twenty years between each. Wonder what'll be screening in 2015. (p.s. Andy in the Mayberry show was a single father. Was there ever a backstory episode on that?)
Janet Whitcomb July 6, 2012 at 12:26 am
Like so many Baby Boomers, I grew up watching Sheriff Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee, and all the others. InRead More fact my mom, who was raised in El Modena—later annexed by the City of Orange—used to say she could recognize a lot of the small-town folks from her childhood on The Andy Griffith Show! But my mom also mentioned Andy Griffith's excellence in the 1957 film A Face In the Crowd. Upon seeing the film I was astonished that my mom would have seen it, much less appreciated it, for she much preferred musicals and light comedies. But she stood by her recommendation of both the film and Griffith's performance—even tho' he played a truly nasty individual—and I likewise recommend all Griffith fans to this dark but fascinating film, which is in part based on the rise to fame of folksy radio and TV star Arthur Godfrey. However, if you want something light-hearted, I also recommend 1958's No Time for Sergeants, a film adaptation of the original teleplay and Broadway play, all of which starred Griffith. Bonus: Also featured within the film . . . Don Knotts in a supporting role!
