Los Rios Street Historic District

The Los Rios Street Historic District is the first street ever built in the town and it is best toured by foot. ParkingMore is available on the other side of the train track near the station, or on the west side at the Los Rios Park. There are shops, restaurants and parks located on this side of the tracks, including some of the town's original and oldest buildings. The setting is picture-perfect, with gift stores stocked with swallow bird souvenirs and objects. The Los Rios Park is furthest to the west and has a modern play area for children. There is a petting zoo, a museum that celebrates the town of San Juan Capistrano and an old-fashioned tea parlor where it's nice to take a break and sit in the shade with a pot of tea.

Los Rios Park is located in the historical Los Rios Street District, which is a landmarked area of San JuanMore Capistrano, but this new park was actually dedicated in 2009. The district was in much need of parking, so a large lot was created along with the park.

Although modern in design, the park retains the small-town character that is native to the area. It is adjacent to the historic Montanez Adobe and is within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The park has a play area for children as well as picnic and recreation areas. There are restrooms. Walking paths connect to the Trabuco Creek Trail and the train station. The park is operated by the City of San Juan Capistrano.

Tucked away in the Los Rios Street Historical District, Hidden House Coffee Shop is in a landmark building -- the 1890More Oliveras House -- on the oldest street in town. Though there's a small sitting parlor inside, where the coffee is roasted and stored, most patrons enjoy sitting outside under the shade trees that hide the cottage and give the shop its name. This family-owned business specializes in brewing the best all-natural coffees from around the globe, served alongside sandwiches and pastries. The clientele's made up of a nice mix of locals and tourists who enjoy wandering about the neighboring shops.
Cottage Home & Garden

The Cottages Home and Garden Shop is located in the Los Rios Street Historic District of San Juan Capistrano. TheMore structure is one of the original cottages that were built in the 1880's.

It houses a large selection of vintage antiques, cottage white furnishings, reproduction glass, home decor and hostess gifts and foods. It also carries painted and glass art, scented candles and tea sets with all of the trimmings.

There is a baby and toddler boutique, jewelry and women's accessories. The garden section of the boutique offers a variety of landscape decor, including statues, iron work and water elements.

O’Neill Museum

The O'Neill Museum is located in the Los Ramos Street Historical district, where many of the first buildings wereMore created in 1880s for the new town San Juan Capistrano. In 1976, the Cornwell Family, then the owners of the building and the nearby El Adobe restaurant donated the structure to the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society. The building became known as the O'Neill Museum after the O'Neill family donated a large sum of money to the society for the refurbishment of the structure. It now holds the archives of photos, books, documents, maps, genealogical records and oral histories for the historical society. Visitors today are allowed to view the house, which is furnished in the style of that period, and view all of the collected photos and archives of the town.

The Zoomars Petting Zoo is located in the Los Ramos Street Historic District. The appearance of the ranch farm with itsMore gathering of farm animals adds to the history and charm of the town's oldest street. It is a popular destination for local kids to host birthday parties. Carolyn, the owner, has arranged several different options and prices for the parties on the web page. There are pony and horse rides as well as the gathering of sheep, birds, chickens, roosters, goats and donkeys for the kids to pet. There are even llamas from Peru and colorful tropical parrots from Brazil. A small train ride that encircles the property is available for children wishing to keep a safe distance from the animals. Zoomars is adjacent to the Los Ramos Park and Ito Nursery.

The Hummingbird House Cafe is located in the Los Rios Street Historic District, the oldest section of the town and theMore area's actual first street. It is situated adjacent to the train station as well as other sight-seeing haunts. The area is best enjoyed by foot so customers can wander through the old buildings, the boutique shopping and restaurants. Hummingbird Cafe is in one of these landmark buildings, the 1878 Combs House. Considering the quaint western appearance, one would expect to find the usual American cafe fair, but when you enter the kitchen of owners Milen Tsekov and Mariana Artatchka you will discover the authentic homemade cuisine of their native Greece. Menu items include coffee, sandwiches, wraps and Greek favorites such as stuffed grape leaves and hummus dip with drizzled Greek olive oil drizzled and pita chips. Make sure to order a homemade Greek pastry such as Baklava along with a cup of hot espresso.

San Juan Capistrano, population 34,839 according to 2006 Census data, is nestled among rolling hills and locatedMore directly off the I-5. Its residents distinguish their city from other South Orange County ones by highlighting its history as one of California's oldest towns, and its swaths of open space and its numerous schools, including four private high schools. 

The city is located less than four miles from the coast, with an easily accessible trail that leads bicyclists and pedestrians to Doheny Sate Beach. Its small downtown is filled with mom-and-pop restaurants and retailers, but its crown is the Mission San Juan Capistrano—"The Jewel of the Missions"—which was founded in 1776. Visitors departing the Amtrak or Metrolink train enter the heart of downtown in the Los Rios Historic District, which comprises one of the oldest continuing neighborhoods in Orange County, including three adobe homes built in 1794.

The Ramos House Café is located in the Historic District, the oldest section of town. It is surrounded byMore buildings that were erected to house the workers who would come to build the Mission. The cafe is owned and operated by Executive Chef John Q. Humphreys, who opened it in 1994. His menu specializes in contemporary American cuisine, with homage to the traditional flavors and cuisine of the South. Breakfast and lunch are served all day Tuesday through Friday. Some of the Ramos House specials include potato, corn and buttermilk crab cakes with greens; Mac 'n cheese with smoked chicken and asparagus; and Southern fried chicken with buttermilk dressing. The restaurant features an outdoor garden, where diners can see and smell the fresh herbs being grown. The cafe is also a beautiful setting for a wedding or special event.
