San Juan Capistrano, population 34,839 according to 2006 Census data, is nestled among rolling hills and located…More directly off the I-5. Its residents distinguish their city from other South Orange County ones by highlighting its history as one of California's oldest towns, and its swaths of open space and its numerous schools, including four private high schools.
The city is located less than four miles from the coast, with an easily accessible trail that leads bicyclists and pedestrians to Doheny Sate Beach. Its small downtown is filled with mom-and-pop restaurants and retailers, but its crown is the Mission San Juan Capistrano—"The Jewel of the Missions"—which was founded in 1776. Visitors departing the Amtrak or Metrolink train enter the heart of downtown in the Los Rios Historic District, which comprises one of the oldest continuing neighborhoods in Orange County, including three adobe homes built in 1794.
