St. Margaret's Episcopal School student Ryan O'Hare thought he was a perfectly heathy teen until he was diagnosed with Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome because of a heart screening offered to athletes at his school. After the screening by Heartfelt Cardiac Project, a Laguna Beach-based charity, O'Hare spent many months receiving tests and evalutions from various cardiologists, and eventually underwent a procedure to correct the defect in his heart. O'Hare's parents, Mark and Rita O'Hare, said they couldn't stress enough what they learned from the experience. "We feel that every responsible parent and spouse should have their children and loved ones screened," they wrote in a letter now published on the nonprofit's website. Another heath …

San Juan Hills High has another team headed for the CIF post-season playoffs: the boys varsity baseball team. Getting there wasn’t easy. They won, 6-4 According to the Ventura County Star, for the Stallions, this game was all about the first inning. San Juan Hills scored all of its runs in its first ups, five before the Bulldogs managed to make the first out. Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.
They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

The Stallions lose out to West Ranch High School in the second round of championship playoffs.
The Stallions boys volleyball team went down Thursday night in second-round CIF play-off action. This is the first season the boys from San Juan Hills High have made it to post-season play. On Tuesday, they bested the boys from Beckman High and earned the right to travel to Stevenson Ranch (near Magic Mountain). The teams were evenly matched and split the first two games, according to the Newhall Signal. West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks told that paper his team just wanted it more. The tipping point came in the third game, the paper reported. "The Wildcats scored three straight points to finish it off when San Juan committed a back-row violation," wrote the Signal. More like a bad call, said Dave Schickling, parent of SJHHS's Ryan …

Officials fence off the dugouts, saying they may not have been built properly.
By Brittany Christensen EDITOR'S NOTE: This article is written by a student journalist from San Juan Hills High's The Express newspaper. Worried about student safety, Capistrano Unified School District officials fenced off the baseball dugouts at San Juan Hills High on April 23, just before one of the more important games of the season – and they have remained off limits ever since. The Stallions have their last game of the season Thursday. Officials have been curious about the dugouts since December, according to Principal Tom Ressler, but left them alone until shortly after the pool dedication ceremony, when Interim Deputy Superintendent Tim Holcomb ordered the dugouts closed until further notice. Later, workers hammered out two holes in…

After dropping the first set, the Stallions win three in a row to advance to the next round.
The 2011 boys golf CIF championship banner is looking a little lonely up there by itself in the "Saddle Dome" at San Juan Hills High. Might a 2012 boys volleyball banner join it? It's a possibility, now that the Stallions have passed their first-round opponent in Beckman High of Irvine Tuesday night at home. After a strong start with four unanswered points in the first game, Beckman returned, chasing on the Stallions' heels and coming from behind to win the first set of the match. But the San Juan Hills boys took the next three sets in a row to make a definitive statement that they do indeed belong in post-season play. Final scores, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20. Coach Justin DeBlasio said the Patriots' play threw the team off a bit. "They…

I'm frustrated for the parents who gave $20,000 and followed the districts instructions only to have this dugout remain unusable. If this doesn't sum up how ridiculous many of these regulations are I don't know what does. Many parents do their part in our district only to encounter these kinds of problems. Nice article Britanny. Keep up the good work.   more ›
