Amid plagiarism allegations and well into the fall semester, San Juan Capistrano City Councilman Derek Reeve is inexplicably no longer teaching at Concordia University. "Derek Reeve is not currently employed by Concordia," a university spokeswoman said Friday, declining to provide an explanation. The move comes two weeks after Patch reported that Reeve lifted numerous passages from copyrighted articles in blog essays he wrote for Patch, as well as in two of his City Council staff reports. The authors whose words he copied labeled Reeve's actions plagiarism. When the story broke, Reeve was employed part-time by Concordia, a private Christian university in Irvine. Most writers agree that imitation is flattering. But they still want credit—even when the "imitation" appears in a blog. City Councilman Derek Reeve, facing criticism for writing blog posts that heavily copied the words of other authors, offers a different view. Writing in today's Orange County Register, he acknowledged "carelessly" using "previously published material" while blogging for San Juan Capistrano Patch. But he dismissed accusations of plagiarism, saying blogs are informal musings "in which the standards of communication are relaxed." A recovering addict, Matthew David Pack, 24, died in February doing what he loved: spending time outdoors.
It’s like Matthew David Pack —the man from San Juan Capistrano who died rappelling Mildred Falls in February—lived a lifetime in his three years in Orange County. Only 24, he came from West Virginia to finish school at Concordia University—and to get sober. Matt moved in many worlds, said pastor Dave Brisbin. He had his recovery world. He had his academic world, his wilderness world–“that was a big one for him"—his service world and his spiritual world. The exhibition game versus Japan's Girls' Youth National Team is at 7 p.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal High School.
The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Training Team will participate in a friendly exhibition match versus Japan's Girls' Youth National Team at 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, at St. Margaret's Episcopal School. The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Training Team practices locally in Anaheim at the American Sports Center. The team is currently hosting an eight-day training block for Japan's Girls' Youth National Team. The Japanese team arrived Feb. 25 and will leave on March 4. During that time, the team has trained several times at Sports Center, and will compete in two friendly exhibition matches against their host team.
