Architect: Kinoshita Needs $7.7 Mil for Modernization

Across its 55 schools, Capistrano Unified is looking at an $822 million tab. This is Kinoshita Elementary's share.

To modernize Kinoshita Elementary School would take $7.7 million.

That’s the assessment of an architectural firm the district hired in 2009 to take a look at the district’s 55 campuses. The report was recently updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

Included in the $7.7 million figure are new buildings to replace half the schools portables, at a cost of $5.2 million. The school also has $770,000 in needed repairs that the district has deferred in recent years, including those to the fire alarm, phone systems and painting.

The updated numbers also include $684,000 to upgrade to the latest technology for students.

Kinoshita does have some fire-safety issues. Firefighters cannot get access to 5,760 square feet of the school’s buildings.
