UPDATED: Deputies Shoot Man Allegedly Armed With Knife

The San Juan Capistrano man, believed to be in his 20s, allegedly lunged at deputies who heard a woman screaming from inside their Via Carlos home.

A man allegedly armed with a knife was shot in the hand by law enforcement Tuesday at a San Juan Capistrano home on Via Carlos.

Allegedly wielding a knife, the man lunged at Orange County Sheriff's deputies who had forced their way into his residence upon hearing screams from a woman inside, according to sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

Multiple shots were fired as two deputies responded to a 911 hangup call at about 11:45 a.m.

Upon arriving, the deputies set up a perimeter around the home at 32102 Via Carlos. As the screams intensified, Amormino said the deputies feared for her life. They entered the property and encountered the man, believed to be in his late 20s.

It is unclear how many shots were fired. The man’s injuries are not life-threatening and he is undergoing surgery at Mission Hospital, Amormino said.

The man and the woman are believed to be related. Neither of their identities have been released. A second man left the property before deputies arrived, but he has since been found and interviewed by investigators.

"I think they're all related somehow ... I don't know the connection," Amormino said.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is on scene to investigate, as is typical with officer-involved shootings.
