Local Nonprofit Needs Votes in Grant Contest

San Juan Capistrano-based Homefront America is among 10 Southern California nonprofits competing for a $10,000 grant in the Cox Cares Community Grant challenge.

, a San Juan Capistrano-based military outreach organization, is up for a $10,000 prize in the 2011 Cox Cares community grant challenge.

Resident Mamie Yong Maywhort, the co-founder of the organization, said the grant would be a boon.

If it receives the most votes in the online contest, Homefront America will use the grant to launch Dress for Success, providing military children with a new outfit or a new pair of shoes.

The new initiative will complement its existing Pack for Success program, where name-brand backpacks are filled with grade specific school supplies for military children each fall.

The nonprofit's efforts are funded by donations, and its other programs include scholarships holiday (Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas) meals and gifts, plus special events for military family.

It is among 10 Southern California nonprofits selected by Cox Cares as finalists in the grant challenge.
