Family Members of JSerra Teacher Homeless in Philippines

A school counselor is hoping the community will rally with support.

The family of a teacher at San Juan Capistrano’s JSerra Catholic High School has been directly impacted by the typhoon in the Philippines, and the school community is looking to help.

Religion teacher Nia Hunt has family members living in Tacloban and “are in dire need of your help,” writes JSerra counselor Oliva Huie in her GoFundMe campaign. To see devastating before and after photos of Tacloban, go here.

It was one of the areas hardest hit, said Hunt in a letter posted at GoFundMe. More than a dozen family members have been impacted, including her aunt Belinda, whose home was crushed by five coconut trees.

“My other aunt, Mercedes and her family had to evacuate their house and climb up on top of the roof in order to avoid the floodwaters and not be carried away by them,” Hunt wrote. “My brother, Alan, his wife and my nieces and nephew suffered minor wounds from their home breaking apart and things shattering. All in all, the most devastating thing is that they and all my cousins are currently homeless.”

She is hoping to raise $15,000 to help rebuild the homes.
