From a city of San Juan Capistrano press release:

On Friday, April 11th, a member of a senior basketball team, Joe Pierantoni, suffered a heart attack while practicing at the city's gymnasium.

Kipp Lyons, community services coordinator, jumped into action utilizing an AED machine, which is maintained at the city facility. Fortunately, there was also a physician on scene that partnered with Kipp by providing chest compressions. The basketball player responded well and was transported by paramedics to the hospital.

"We are very proud of Kipp's fast thinking and heroic efforts to help this man," stated City Manager Karen Brust. "We encourage our city staff to be trained in AED so that they can help others when it becomes necessary, as Kipp did."

Kipp says that he just went into action as he learned from his training and is happy to report that the Mr. Pierantoni emailed him to thank him and let him know that he is doing well and being cared for by his family.

Good job Kipp! Thankfully the city invested in the AED machine as well as the training. Nice timing too that a physician was there to assist. Hope Mr. Pierantoni recovers fully and is home soon.
