BLOG: List of Huge Scholarships for Average Students

Like a pill to get in shape and lose weight, or a quick operation to reverse the aging process, this request for a "list" of colleges that will offer a lot of money to any student is very common.

Like a pill to get in shape and lose weight, or a quick operation to reverse the aging process, this request for a “list” of colleges that will offer a lot of money to any student is very common.

I have written many times that college is not for everyone…and that “SOME” colleges will pay big bucks for the right students.  But there is no magic formula…no one-size fits all…no “LIST”.

One thing that is for sure is that college is expensive.  And while a majority of the colleges in the country give scholarships to high achieving academic or artistic students, there are none that I know of who give money for barely scraping by.

Need based money (grants) are one thing, but I am constantly surprised by the phone calls and e-mails I get asking about money for a student who is very average academically.  AP has sadly come to be known as “Any Pupil” rather than advanced placement, so even taking a boatload of AP classes will not guarantee academic merit money.  At some schools, it is a huge help…but at the brand name colleges, you need 5’s on AP’s just to get admitted…with no money attached.

Since I have become such a fan of “Zero Debt College”, my advice is if the parents can’t pay for college without going into debt (that includes robbing from your retirement), it is super important that the student not only excel and take the most challenging curriculum available, but that they apply to the colleges that will reward that academic prowess.

So just to be clear…the list of colleges that offer big money for the average student doesn’t exist…But if you find the quick fix or a pill for keeping dog hair from piling up in the corner…let me know.
