20-Year-old Man with Autism Saves Grandma from Burning Home

The Sunday fire caused $300,000 to a San Juan Capistrano home, officials estimate.

A San Juan Capistrano man with autism is being lauded a hero after guiding his grandmother to safety through a burning house Sunday night.

KABC News has the interview with the hero, his father and a neighbor who tried to help 20-year-old John Kurrasch and his grandmother when the smoke made it too difficult.

That's when Kurrasch picked up the lead.

" I said, 'Just take us straight out, man, let's just walk out of this place. And we've got to do it now,'" neighbor Tony Weeda told a KABC reporter.

The fire, which officials estimate to have caused about $300,000 in damage, was confined to the garage. It occurred in the 31500 block of Paseo Campeon in San Juan Capistrano.

"His heroic actions, alerting the family, basically saved both of them," said OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.
