Suspicious Object That Shut Down Disneyland Was 'Spirit Message"

UPDATE: (1:11 p.m.) Disneyland announced that it will extend its hours tonight because of the delay guests experienced this morning caused by the "suspicious object." According to Brown, Disneyland park will now close at 1 a.m. and California Adventure will close at 10 p.m. Also, an additional "World of Color" show at Disney California Adventure has been added tonight at 10:15 and an additional "Fantasmic!" show at Disneyland has been added tonight at 11.

UPDATE: (11:16 a.m.) The suspicious object turned out to be a rolled up piece of paper wishing the readers goodwill, said Sgt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department. The author saw the news coverage and contacted police, he said. "It was a written goodwill, spirit message," he said. The point? "Sending positive thoughts."

UPDATE: (11:04 a.m.) Police have determined the suspicious object to be "harmless," said Suzi Brown, Disneyland spokeswoman. Disneyland is now reopened to the public. "In an abundance of caution and to allow the security teams the opportunity to learn more, we kept guests away from the area," she said. 

A Disneyland employeed found a suspicious "object" Saturday morning at the main gate between  and California Adventure.

The area was closed to the public and a bomb squad called in.

ticket booths at about 8 a.m.

Sgt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department told Patch the package is in the tree near the main entrance.

"During their normal walk-through of the guest accessible areas, an employee found something out of the ordinary in a tree near the ticket booths," Dunn said.

The bomb squad has been called to the scene, he added.

The area has been closed to the public, and Anaheim police report heavy traffic on streets around the Disney resorts.

KNX Radio is reporting that those already in the park may continue their visit. Dunn did not know whether they are being cordoned off from the front of the park.

"The safety of our guests and cast members is our top priority," said resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown in a statement. "In an abundance of caution and to allow the security teams to learn more, we are keeping guests away from the area at this time."

Anaheim Police are advising drivers to avoid roads west of Disneyland.
