At 3:38 a.m., Laguna Beach police received a 911 call from a man reporting that his car had broken down on North Coast Highway in Emerald Bay, according to Lt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department. The man said he had hit an animal, but when officers arrived, it became immediately apparent that the man had struck a human being, Kravetz said, as the damage on the Camry was consistent with a person being hit, and there was physical evidence on the car from the victim.

Earlier in the morning, the Huntington Beach Police Department had put out a countywide broadcast to all the other police agencies of the hit-and-run, including the suspect vehicle description.

Officers detained the suspect, and Huntington Beach police came to arrest him.
