Measure B: Potential for More Horses, Traffic And Higher Water Rates

San Juan Capistrano City Councilman Derek Reeve responds to arguments in favor of Measure B.

A series of arguments for and against Measure B written by City Council members and published on San Juan Capistrano Patch concludes today with this letter from City Councilman Derek Reeve in opposition to the ballot initiative. With a majority of votes on June 7, Measure B will uphold changes made to the Distrito La Novia-San Juan Meadows development plans, including a reduction in the number of homes and the addition of a large equestrian center.

The City Council has not listened and ignores the facts!

Four council members continue to dismiss the will of the people and negative impacts to the character of our special town.

The City Council also ignores the facts. The original Distrito La Novia plan called for a 200 room hotel (not 300) and a small church (not a City Hall). The Meadows plan called for 275 homes (not 440) and 165 low impact senior apartments. Neither would likely be built for many years.

  • More traffic! This proposed retail strip-mall with 40 apartments on top, a market, restaurant, office, 90 condos and a large equestrian center, is simply too large, too intense and will create too much traffic!
  • High Density is not in character with our San Juan Capistrano. We do not want to look like other stacked and packed cities.
  • Equestrian Facility there will always be horses in San Juan Capistrano, however, 1,500 horses on the Meadows is too much! Despite an initial 'cap' of 500 horses, under current city codes future City Councils are allowed to increase that number without a vote of the people.
  • Water Rates are already skyrocketing! This project was never part of the General Plan and will push our water rates through the roof!
  • Who Needs Another Struggling Strip-Mall? We should be helping the businesses we already have, not hurting them by creating competition.

Help preserve our unique small town character for future generations. Vote NO on Measure B.
