61 Non-Teaching Schools Positions on Chopping Block

Capo Unified may eliminate some preschool teachers to bilingual instructional assistants to all sorts of jobs.

Tenured teachers may not be receiving pink slips in the Capistrano Unified School District but some non-teaching employees are.

The school board voted Wednesday night to eliminate 61 positions, about half of which are currently vacant.

"Thirty-two would impact actual employees," said Jodee Brentlinger, assistant superintendent of personnel services.

The move gives the district flexibility should funding for the 2013-14 year not materialize as expected, she said.

As it is, school district officials are anticipating cutting $21 million from next school year’s budget. Better figures will be available after Gov. Brown releases his revised state budget next month.

At that point, negotiations will begin with the district’s various employee groups, including teachers and the non-teaching staff.

Last month, the Board of Trustees let pass a deadline that would have put teachers on notice that their jobs were threatened. The move changed a trend of year-over-year of pink slips to hundreds of teachers, many of which were rescinded in time for the next school year.
