CVCS Bballers Beat Division 2 Century High

The Eagles boys' basketball team bests Century High, 39-34.

The  boys' basketball team didn’t look at the numbers and get intimidated Tuesday night. Century High School, a Division 2 public school in Santa Ana with more than 2,500 kids enrolled, was on the schedule.

But the Eagles didn’t care. They went out and controlled the game from start to finish, earning a 39-34 victory in front of an electric crowd led by CVCS Student Sectionm the “Blu Cru.”

They started off hot from the tip. Chris Lenzen threw a sharp pass to Parker Coss for a layup and the Eagles were up by 2, 5 seconds after they started. Coss then hit a 3 and then had a steal for a layup.  He had 7 points in the first 1:30 seconds on his way to 13 points, making three 3-pointers.

But it wasn’t about the offense on Tuesday night.  It was all about the defense. The defense was smothering. Guards Jeff Sholar, Daniel Koh, Lenzen, Andre Anderson and Coss were fast and quick, protecting the perimeter.

RJ Thompson took care of the paint. It was his domain. He had 12 rebounds and 7 blocked shots, which propelled the Eagles to only allow 34 points on the night.

The Eagles pushed their lead to 13 in the third quarter with Thompson leading the way with drives to the basket and 3 3-pointers.  He finished with 15 points to go along with those 12 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.

Koh hit a huge 3-pointer under pressure in the corner with 4 minutes remaining to stop Century’s run and seal the victory. He had 10 points and two 3-pointers.

Lenzen finished off the game, killing the clock and managing the game late in the fourth quarter. He had arguably his best game all year from the point guard position.

Century drops to 2-13. The Eagles move to 10-4 and are still ranked No. 14 in their division. Their next home game is 7:30 p.m. Friday.
